2,000 home application submitted in Somerset

Words: Laura Edgar

Taylor Wimpey UK, Bovis Homes, Mactaggart & Mickel Home Limited and Summerfield Homes have submitted an outline planning application for a 2,000 home garden community to Taunton Deane Borough Council.

Submitted on behalf of the developers by Barton Willmore, the development is proposed for the south west of Taunton and is expected to generate 3,300 jobs. Additionally, 500 homes have been designated for shared ownership or rent on the 268-acre site, while a new primary school, shops, community facilities and cycle routes are also provided for.

The plans were developed collaboratively with members of the community and other stakeholders over several years through workshops and public exhibitions.

Barton Willmore explained that the proposed garden community comprises two neighbourhoods connected by green space, will be “well-connected to Taunton town centre”, and include allotments, neighbourhood parks and tree-lined streets.

Kevin Parker, urban design director at Barton Willmore, said: “This proposal seeks to provide a new sustainable community which sits comfortably in its rural context and reflects the distinctive character of Taunton and nearby villages. It will provide homes for people at all stages of life along with employment opportunities within walkable distances.”
