The Scottish Government has announced that 102,055 affordable homes have been delivered since April 2007 – 70,866 of which were for social rent.

Housing secretary Shona Robison said it is a “remarkable achievement”.

The statistical release also showed:

  • 17,029 – the number of new-build homes completed across all sectors in the year ending June 2020. This is 4,439 homes (21 per cent) fewer than the year ending June 2019. The government notes that activity levels were affected by Covid-19 lockdown measures.
  • Private-led completions declined by 3,725 homes (23 per cent), housing association completions declined by 340 homes (8 per cent) and local authority completions were down by 374 homes (26 per cent).
  • 20,24 – the number of new-build starts across all sectors in the year ending June 2020. This is 3,194 fewer than the previous year, a 14 per cent decline.
  • Private-led starts and local authority starts dropped by 4,221 homes (25 per cent) and 162 homes (9 per cent) respectively. Housing association approvals increased by 1,189 homes (26 per cent).
  • 971 – the number of social homes completed in the quarter from July to September 2020. This is a decrease of 329 homes (25 per cent) on the 1,300 completions in the same quarter in 2019.
  • 4,402 – the number of social sector housing completions for the year ending September 2020, a decline of 999 homes (18 per cent) on the 5,401 social sector homes completed in the previous year.

Robison said: “Scotland has been leading the way across the UK with delivery of affordable housing, but we know there is more to do to ensure everyone has a warm, affordable home that meets their needs in a vibrant, safe community.

“Our utmost priority over the past year has been to keep Scotland safe from coronavirus (Covid-19), and this has meant placing restrictions on construction or at times stopping it altogether. While this has affected our ability to meet our target of delivering 50,000 affordable homes over the last parliamentary period, we are continuing to work closely with partners across the housing sector to deliver the remaining homes as quickly as it is safe to do so.

“We will then deliver a further 100,000 homes by 2032, with at least 70 per cent of these for social rent. This is just one of the actions set out in our ‘Housing to 2040’ strategy for building a fairer, more equal housing sector, alongside taking steps to tackle high rents in the private sector, setting a single set of standards for housing quality and accessibility, and continuing our work to end homelessness and rough sleeping once and for all.”
