Orkney – rich natural assets and a lengthy heritage

In Orkney, a collection of islands just off the north-east coast of Great Britain, the sea is an inescapable fact of life that shapes almost every aspect of island activity.

Farming and fishing have served as the islands’ core industries over generations, with the oil and gas industries having joined the mix from the 1970s onwards. Today, 10 per cent of the UK’s oil flows through Orkney.
