Decision: Midland Metro extension approved for Wolverhampton

The Secretary of State for Transport, Patrick McLoughlin, has approved the Midland Metro (Wolverhampton City Centre Extension) Order, allowing developer Centro to construct, operate and maintain an extension to the tramway system between Bilston Street and Wolverhampton railway station.

In his decision letter the secretary of state noted the key aims of the scheme as including the improvement of access to local and regional employment opportunities and educational institutions, the support of business growth and to address a growing need for improved public transport access in the city.

The scheme was also judged to be in keeping with the objectives of the wider
