Called in: Jenrick rejects Eddie Stobart national distribution centre

The housing secretary has refused plans for a ‘very large’ distribution centre in Warrington that would have created 730 new jobs, citing unacceptable harm to the green belt and a dearth of ‘very special circumstances’.

Jenrick acknowledged that the scheme would generate up to 730 new jobs and add £18 million to the economy. In the planning balance, however, the minister ruled that the scheme's “very significant” economic benefits did not amount to the “very special circumstances” necessary to justify the harm to the green belt he had indentified. The application was therefore refused.
