Appeal: Traveller pitches approved despite government ‘adjustment’ to NPPF

An inspector has approved eight traveller pitches near Canterbury because of ‘personal and general need’, despite the government's ‘technical adjustment’ to the NPPF preventing travellers from using housing supply shortfalls to engage NPPF paragraph 14's ‘tilted balance’.

The proposal sought permission for eight additional gypsy traveller pitches in Fordwich, near Canterbury, in addition to four existing pitches that were approved by Canterbury City Council in 2008 and 2015. Although the Canterbury District Local Plan includes policies on what kinds of area will be suitable for gypsy pitches, no specific sites have been allocated.
