Appeal: Listed building residential replacement approved for Brighton

An inspector has approved the demolition of a grade II listed building and replacement with a mixed-use scheme including 70 residential units, commercial space and a community room in Brighton, after finding that measures could be introduced to safeguard the living conditions of neighbours.

The listed building in question, ‘The Astoria’, is an art deco building which has previously been used as a bingo hall and a cinema. It is noted to have been vacant for some time and described as a “blight on the Valley Gardens Conservation Area”, the principle of its loss having been accepted by Brighton & Hove City Council.Inspector Tom Wood noted that the appeal........
