Appeal: 250-home scheme blocked despite housing supply uncertainty


Plans for a large housing development in Maidstone have been rejected despite uncertainty over housing supply levels in the area, after an inspector ruled that the scheme's potential harm to the landscape carried more weight.

The appeal site is located to the southwest of Maidstone, Kent, outside of its settlement boundary and therefore subject to countryside development policy. Inspector Olivia Spencer agreed with the appellant’s description of the area as “generally suburban in nature”, but stated that its “dramatic relationship” with the Medway Valley sets it apart.
